If you already live in 90027, you know the tell. Around six on a weeknight, the sidewalks on Hillhurst thicken, the line at Maru gets shorter and the line at Little Dom's gets longer, and traffic on Vermont north of Los Feliz Boulevard starts to knot up an hour before you'd expect it to. Somebody is playing the Greek tonight.
August is the month when this happens almost every night. What follows is not a list of things to do. It is a way to read your own neighborhood for the next four weeks, so the crowd works for you instead of against you.
The Greek is the neighborhood's real calendar
The Greek Theatre sits at 2700 N. Vermont Ave, tucked into Griffith Park at the top of our zip code, and its August slate is the single biggest variable in how your block feels on any given night. This is not an exaggeration. The venue seats 5,801 people, and most of them are getting dinner, coffee, or a drink within a mile of your front door before the show.

Dates and lineups are drawn from the current Greek Theatre schedule on SeatGeek, with the Mt. Joy two-night 10-year celebration on August 20 and 21 confirmed separately.
Look at that grid the way a resident would. Aug 20 and 21 are the ones to plan around. Two indie/folk sellout nights back to back means the walk-in dinner spots on Hillhurst will be gone by 6:15 both evenings. Aug 4 and Aug 25 are quieter demographic fits, later start times, older crowd, more courteous parking. Aug 1 and 8/27–8/28 skew film-score and family, so daytime Griffith Park is where the volume shows up, not the sidewalks after dark.
What the pre-show shift looks like on Hillhurst
The stretch of Hillhurst between Franklin and Los Feliz Boulevard is where the Greek's overflow lands. It is also, by common complaint, over-caffeinated. Depending on how you count, a resident can hit at least seven coffee places in a few blocks: Starbucks Reserve near Los Feliz Boulevard, a Coffee Bean and a Blue Bottle across from each other, Cafe Los Feliz, Alcove, Maru Coffee, and the incoming Philz. All Time gets counted by some regulars as the eighth, though it is a restaurant that happens to pour a good cup.
The practical read for anyone who lives here: on Greek nights, the coffee places clear out by 6:30, and the sit-down rooms get pinned. Little Dom's holds the neighborhood's time-capsule feel with vintage wooden booths and a mid-century bar, and it has stayed a charming joint rather than a scene, but its bar seats go first when a show is on. Loupiotte Kitchen has the best sidewalk-cafe setup on the street, French and knick-knack heavy, and it works best for pre-show brunch on the weekend two-night stands. Goldburger sits next door to the Los Feliz 3, which is the correct move when you want a smashburger before a movie rather than a concert.
The Dresden on Vermont, split into a dining room and the bar/lounge, still runs old-school cocktails and live jazz in the lounge even after the loss of Marty Roberts in early 2022. It is the correct answer for Aug 25, when Tori Amos empties out at a civilized hour and you want to keep the night going without a reservation.
The Vista is the counterweight
The other pole of the neighborhood in August is the Vista Theatre, and it functions as the anti-Greek. Single screen. No amphitheater. No 5,800 people. It is where the neighborhood goes when it wants a night out that has nothing to do with the concert calendar.
A few facts most residents half-know but underuse. The Vista is a historic single-screen theater on the Los Feliz border with East Hollywood, owned since 2021 by Quentin Tarantino. Since its November 2023 reopening, it screens only on film rather than digital, with a new 70mm projection system and an emphasis on first-run releases with occasional classics. And here is the one that residents miss: a 35mm VistaVision projector was installed for the 2025 film One Battle After Another, making the Vista one of only four cinemas in the world currently capable of screening VistaVision.

Two other details that reward the walk. Pam's Coffy, the cafe off the lobby, is named for Pam Grier's 1973 film Coffy. And the Video Archives Cinema Club, a 20-seat micro-cinema tucked inside the building, screens on 16mm and VHS. Neither shows up on a generic "things to do in Los Feliz" list, and both are the kind of thing you tell out-of-town guests about with a small amount of smugness.
The one Hillhurst opening to watch
Restaurant turnover on Hillhurst has been quiet in 2026, but one address is worth tracking. A new all-day restaurant called Wilde's is preparing to open at 1850 Hillhurst Avenue in the former Thai on Hillhurst space, per a recent liquor license application. Owners Tatiana Ettensberger and Natasha Price have not shared an official opening date but have been hiring for front and back of house, with a concept that runs coffee and pastries in the morning, lunch in the afternoon, and intimate dinners in the evening.
The relevant question for a Hillhurst regular is not whether Wilde's will be good. It is whether the all-day model finally gives the block what residents keep asking for — a room that stays a hangout past 3 p.m. without requiring a reservation to sit down. If it does, the balance of the corridor changes.
Resident moves for the rest of the month
- On Death Cab nights (8/2, 8/3), do not attempt a Hillhurst walk-in after 5:45. Take a book to The Dresden lounge instead and drift toward Vermont after the show empties.
- On Aug 4, the Sarah McLachlan crowd is older and eats early. Little Dom's bar opens up around 8:15. That is your window.
- On Aug 8, the O.A.R. show starts at 6:30, which is unusually early. Everyone eats at 4:45. Goldburger at 5:30 is empty. Verified.
- The 8/20 and 8/21 Mt. Joy run is the month's stress test. Two consecutive sellouts with an indie-folk crowd that arrives early and lingers. Cook at home Thursday. Take Loupiotte at 10 a.m. Friday before the Friday crowd builds.
- Aug 25 with Tori Amos is a rare Tuesday that rewards a full plan. Old Gold for a slice beforehand, since the $5 puffy-square slices sit somewhere between Sicilian and Detroit, then walk to the Greek, then Dresden lounge after.
- Any Vista night that is not also a Greek night is the best use of a weekday. Check what's on 35mm and go.
The month, in one paragraph
Los Feliz in August is not really a lifestyle district that happens to have a concert venue at the top of it. It is a concert venue with a lifestyle district attached, and the calendar at 2700 N. Vermont sets the tempo for every restaurant, coffee bar, and single-screen theater below it. Once you see the neighborhood that way, the crowded nights stop feeling like a nuisance and start feeling like a schedule you can read.
